TRIBUTE TO CDE SENZO MKHIZE BY ANC KZN PROVINCIAL CHAIRPERSON SIHLE ZIKALALA PRESENTED AT THE FUNERAL ON THE 14 MAY 2016

I have found no better expression that define the life of Cde Senzo Mkhize than the words of Fredrick Engels at the funeral of Karl Marx, when he said:

"For Marx was before all else a revolutionist. His real mission in life was to contribute, in one way or another, to the overthrow of capitalist society and of the state institutions which it had brought into being, to contribute to the liberation of the modern proletariat, which he was the first to make conscious of its own position and its needs, conscious of the conditions of its emancipation. Fighting was his element. And he fought with a passion, a tenacity and a success such as few could rival”. Engels (1883).

Cde Senzo was a revolutionist, his mission was to make a modest contribution to the construction of a better society founded on principles of non-racialism, non-sexism, unite and prospect for all. Thus, the revolution was his way of life, ultimately mission of his living. Cde Senzo could live without the ANC. But more essential to Cde Senzo the ANC, itself, could not life without the revolution.

I start from this assertion because Cde Senzo joined the ANC while he was very young. Upon his joining the ANC his life totally changed to be ANC was of living. He is one of those who were can say with authority that the ANC build people and people build the ANC. Through the ANC Cde Senzo become a leader who led with leadership capacity and wisdom from the ANC. But Cde Senzo endured suffering and hardship to build the ANC.

Thus, I agree with Cde Sibusiso Ndebele where he said: “They are do who struggle for few days and that is fine and acceptable, the those who struggle for years and that is still fine and acceptable, but there are those who struggle for their whole life and those are the ones the struggle cannot do without”.

In South Africa, there are ANC supports, there are members of the ANC but Cde Senzo transcended to be the ANC itself. He was not only a member nor just a leader but an embodiment of values of the ANC itself.

  • For the ANC, Cde Senzo as an activist who would be assign any task and do not complain but do it to the best of his ability.
  • For the ANC Cde Senzo was mediator and assigned deal with serious challenges and he would not feel to have been thrown at the deep end but will resolve challenges and advocate unity in the ANC.
  • For the ANC, as a spokesperson Cde Senzo would never divulge an internal matter to the media to portray others comrades as bad to promote his own profile
  • For the ANC Cde Senzo is departing today have not even linked any information to earn himself glory.
  • For the ANC, he never ventured to populism through cheap statements, proclamations and howling but instead he would remain unpopular in defence of the ANC.

The ANC members owes cadres such a Senzo an everlasting commitment of building a strong ANC that present the interests and aspirations of the people. In that we must:

  • Restore activism of the ANC as a revolutionary movement that exist and lead in all areas and sectors of the people.
  • We must fight factionalism and build unity to preserve the ANC as the only instrument for the liberation of our people.
  • In that Cde Senzo never supported macro-management of ANC operations, including gatekeeping and depraving others the right to join the ANC.
  • Cde Senzo never used his position in government for his own benefit or to benefit those who would in turn support him as an individual.
  • He never supported the use of government positions to sow division and advance patronage.
  • He never frown at all attempts to use government positon as a platform to pursue alternative leadership parallel to that of the ANC elected leadership.

Because it usually and sometime many do say things on the names of those who are no more. I say this with great authority; Cde Senzo Mkhize was still the very same Senzo whom we, in the ANCYL, produced a document in 2000 – 2001 which spelt out elements of divisions in the ANC. Such divisions characterised by the use of the state to determine the internal matters of the ANC.

As the ANC declaration proclaims, Cde Senzo placed his skills and energies at the disposal of the organisation. Even when he had been deployed as Member of Parliament and later became a member of the Legislature, he continue to study to ensure that he remain effective and an all-round cadre that is required by the ANC. For that, all those in the ANC Youth League and those who are still regarded as young in ANC must know that education and knowledge development in the critical weapon in the current battles of the struggle. The success of the decade of the cadre is dependent on producing an ideological, political and academic advance cadership in pursuance of political, technical and sometimes complex tasks of the struggle.

In all legislatures and at national parliament, across the ANC is bench full of opposition parties. Individual they claim to be independent of each other yet in essence they represent the same agenda. Those who claim to be representing the poor connives with those who are well known proponents of liberalism. To them every that attack the ANC is good, everything that attack President Zuma is good.

The politics of populism shall never prevail because on its own it built on foundation of pretext. In its last seating, the legislature had to deal with appropriation bill. While all parties claim to be presenting transformation and empowerment of the black, the Democratic Alliance failed to hind its interests of protecting white economic domination and refuse to support the bill to transform land. They always pretend as if they hate BBEEE because some use it corruptly yet in essence they hate black economic emancipation, they do not promote affirmative action in private sector, in the private sector yet they parade blacks as they leaders. For them the life of black man does not count only his vote is important.

Because of certain interests, when the ANC is attacked some become quite. When they attack President Zuma some do not see a need to respond, others join the chorus only because they think the attack to Zuma help to advance the possibilities of getting leadership positions in the ANC.  They will attack the ANC irrespective of who is its leader.

One of German intellectuals, Pastor Martin Niemöller:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

It is time to close ranks and unite the ANC. It is time for all ensure that challenges facing the ANC and Alliance are resolved through internal processes not through media. It is time for all of use to defend the ANC and its leadership. It time for all of us to exert the hegemony of the ANC and work for an overwhelming victory in the elections.

To Mkhize family, once again Cde Nelly we thank you for not only becoming a wife but be a comrade to Senzo. We thank for all the support you gave through difficult time. We shall forever be indebted to you, and ANC will be always your home

Surely, not because of our choice but we have no option we say farewell. The streets of iNanda, Amaoti, Ntuzuma, Mashu knows you leadership mass rolling actions for freed and better education, the hills and Valleys of this provide felt your hard work of building the ANC even where it had existed before, your voice remain resonating in the minds of many when you were defending the ANC positions in all media platforms.

As a revolutionist, Cde Senzo Mkhize mission in life was a struggle for the liberation of his people and betterment for all. As priest narrated it yesterday evening: He fought his fight, he finished is journey and was for crown.

May the name and work of Cde Senzo Mkhize live forever!!!
